Driving offences solicitorDon’t leave it until you’re spoken to at the roadside by a police officer or receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution to check your driving licence.

If you change your address, or you marry and change your name, you must advise the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency straightaway.

There’s no fee unless you also want to change your photo on a photocard licence, in which case the cost is £20, the same as the fee for renewal at 10 yearly intervals.

Those of us still holding the old paper licence are okay for the moment but from 2015 DVLA will only issue photocard licences and the whole process of keeping them up to date and paying the appropriate fee will apply.

Incidentally beware of third party websites offering to handle your driving licence renewal process. While it is not illegal to offer such a paid for service (as long as it is properly explained) you will almost certainly find yourself paying quite a lot more for a DVLA service that may, depending on the event, often officially cost no more than £20. These third party sites often use a lot of bright orange in their background very similar to that used by Directgov so look carefully for the DVLA logo in the green triangle and, incidentally, they can also betray a lack of professionalism or even ignorance by spelling licence the American way with an S. Save your money but don’t put off what needs to be done.
